Cheap iPhone available until June 2008

Cost of owning an iPhone is coming down

A Reuters news report announced on Weds April 16 2008 that the price of the Apple iPhone is being cut by both Carphone Warehouse and the O2 group. The price reduction is in the order of £100 and applies to the basic iPhone.

The idea of being able to get hold of a cheap iPhone is every teenagers dream come true and, as the 8 gigabyte model will now be on sale at £169 until the beginning of June, there could be a lot of nagging of parents, or depleted savings accounts. Although, one drawback is that the cheap iPhone is only available for contracts starting at £35 per month.

The 16 gigabyte iPhone will stay at the same price – currently over £325.

The move should add to the popularity of the iPhone, already the fastest selling mobile phone on the books at O2. It is also expected to herald the expected launch of a new, high-speed iPhone, which will obviously sell at an even greater price.

Since its launch in the UK last year, the iPhone has only been available on the O2 network, although it is on other networks elsewhere in Europe. In Germany, for example, the iPhone is available through Tmobile, and they have also discounted their basic iPhone model, since early April.

Many companies are producing phones with the same look and functionality of the iPhone, but none yet match its popularity, which shows no sign of waning.
